ABOUT ME
Hello there!
I'm Johnny Fleury, a professional musician, session and touring musician, and music tutor. I taught band performance, guitar and bass tuition, as well as applied theory/aural skills and composition/songwriting, at the Music & Audio Institute of NZ for over 20 years.
Throughout my career, I've had the privilege of playing on numerous recordings and performing live with a variety of artists both locally and abroad, including Dave Dobbyn, Jordan Luck (The Exponents), Greg Johnson, Zowie, Dave McArtney (Hello Sailor, Pink Flamingos), The Idles, Mikaela Cougar, and Prynne.
I've supported many international acts such as U2, Cold Chisel, Albert Collins, Icehouse, B-52s, The Proclaimers, Simply Red, Hunters & Collectors, Melissa Etheridge, and Jenny Morris.
I understand how practical music theory is applied in today’s songwriting, performance, and improvisation. By teaching these real-world skills, I offer students the confidence and practical knowledge needed to succeed. I've found that this approach works particularly well with students who struggle with traditional music theory, and they tend to enjoy the learning process more.
Music theory can seem daunting, but once applied, it becomes an intriguing and powerful tool. I’ve found students engage more when they hear it, play it, and write it themselves.
I stay up-to-date with the latest techniques and styles on a range of instruments, including guitar, bass guitar, upright/double bass, Chapman Stick, Warr Guitar, as well as ethnic stringed instruments like the sitar, saz, banjo, and charango.
I've been fortunate to play with many live bands and on recorded albums, TV adverts, and TV themes, giving me experience across various music styles, including ethnic, original, industrial, contemporary pop, rock, hip-hop, country, dance, jazz, and funk.
I'm passionate about world music and have taught world music instrumentation classes as part of a composition course, in addition to delivering workshops in advanced improvisation and songwriting/composition tools since 2023.
Composing film and TV soundtracks, jingles, and theme songs is another big passion of mine.
Some of the artists, clients, and brands I've collaborated with include TV advertisements for Sony, Ford Motors, Mitsubishi Motors, Cadbury Chocolate, and Honey Puffs. I’ve also recorded for and/or written theme songs for TV shows such as Shortland Street and City Life, as well as sound effects/sound design music for What Now and more.
I am proficient with modern recording software, such as Logic Pro.
Please feel free to reach out if you're interested in music lessons, film or TV work, session work, or if you'd like me to deliver a workshop for your school or institution.
Cheers,
Johnny
